My Students

Do you remember listening to stories as a child? My students love listening to stories. With story telling, my students will be able to enjoy it so much more. Many students with autism struggle with reading, and it is my utmost goal to help my students to develop the literacy skills.

My students face many challenges that you and I can only imagine.

I teach students with autism in second through fourth grades. We are in a self-contained school with students with autism ranging from kindergarten to 22. We depend a lot on the use of visuals in the classroom to help the children be successful in their day. The students I serve have varying levels of skills and need.

My Project

There are many different stories that we hear everyday, but very few stories that we want to retell, act out, or even choose a different ending. But our favorite stories leave us with a smile, a warm heart, and thoughts to add-on and continue those stories. Those are the stories that children love to hear. Some of my students may not have the words to retell the story because of a language barrier, but the story lapboard and the storytelling kits gives them an opportunity to retell a story THEIR WAY without reading the words. Storytelling gives the students a way to use their creativity to create a whole new story or change the ending.

My student will learn the importance of retelling, learn how to tell a story in the correct order, and how to communicate effectively as the story is being retold.

The puppets and flannel board stories will provide the students the opportunity to retell stories in a hands-on and meaningful way.
