It's Rocket Science in Elementary School

Help me give my students a model rocket to build and launch and a subscription to Science World to help us stay up to date with the most interesting scientific research.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Henderson's classroom raised $1,078

My Students

How can we learn about rockets without any rockets? Sure, we could read a book, label a diagram, or even watch a video; but how do you really ignite a student's passion for science, engineering, math, and tech? With a hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky rocket.

My students attend an urban, public school district where 60% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Our school is unique in that it houses three different programs with very different populations. It is sometimes difficult for us to find ways to bridge the gaps between programs, but the other two 6th grade teachers and I have found that using Donorschoose.org to obtain a model rocket for each student is an amazing way to create a shared experience that can be reached by all students. Since we started building rockets, all of the 6th graders in our school have a common experience, and common experiences build community.

My Project

If you want to see students engaged in my classroom, hand them their own Science World magazine subscription. Students will read about up-to-date, nonfiction science topics if it is in a colorful magazine geared to kids their age. The magazine is a wonderful platform from which I can launch lessons, start discussions, and engage in arguments (supported by evidence) about current science issues.

Can you remember the thrill that came from the first rocket you ever launched?

There is no science like hands-on science. Model rockets are a great way to engage students in the science and engineering process and help them fall in love with STEM.
