Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My environmental science students need owl pellets, owl pellet charts and mats.
They will work in teams of 2-3 students to dissect owl pellets. The owl pellet dissection provides a hands-on learning experience about an owl's diet, its place in the food web, and the ecosystem it inhabits by allowing them to analyze the bones and fur found in the pellet, which reveals what the owl has been eating and can provide insights into the local prey population, essentially acting as a window into the natural world around them.
My environmental science class is a diverse group of students. Many speak two languages or are learning English. I have some students with special needs taking the class. A handful have also had some struggles with their science classes in their 9th and 10th grade years. They are currently taking my class as juniors and seniors and need this class to graduate. I really want to make it special for them. I think using the owl pellets will be a great way for them to learn about ecology and give them a new way to collaborate and engage with the content and their peers.
My biology students need some new slides. We did some microscope labs last week and some of our slides are fading a bit. These new slides will help them learn about animal diversity and will replace the old ones.
