it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone loves to play games! I have fond memories of playing Monopoly and Clue with my family when I was a young girl. Children will only learn if they view the activities as fun; games help bring those skills to life and a little competition is great for motivation.
My class is a wonderful group of gifted and talented First Graders.
Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged area and for many of our students, English is a second language. Our families are very supportive, but often work and go to school themselves. They are very willing to work with their children at home, but often there are only so many hours in a day.
My students are very bright and learn skills quickly. When I teach them new objectives, I think they need to have hands-on practice with those skills. They love to play games and sometimes don't even realize they are learning just that it's fun! They are also driven to compete with each other. Games would be a great addition to our daily learning program, tapping into that natural competitive drive.
My Project
These resources will be used on a daily basis to build a foundation of learning among my students. While I pull groups of students to work with on their individual levels, they work with a partner on a learning activity. These games would be perfect for that purpose. The students find a place in the room to play and kind of enter their own world for 10 minutes. They just get engulfed in that learning experience.
In playing partner games, they are helping each other learn and practice these new skills. But more importantly, they are also learning to work together, cooperate, take turns and all the while unknowingly working on enhancing reading and math skills.
Students need hands-on activities to learn!
Study after study tells us this. But, I can tell you from watching and listening to my students that is absolutely a true statement. Effective learning can't be boring and routine. We have to spice up our lessons a little bit and make learning exciting. These games can help me to that for my students. You can help lay the foundation of basic reading and math skills for these kids, but more importantly, help them keep that innate passion for learning!
