This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, "Leave your mark on the world," is the class motto in my "The Day You Begin" themed classroom.
I firmly believe these kids will leave their mark on the world.
My second-grade students are future world changers with an amazing set of skills. Within this group, you'll find the questioner with the power to inquire about anything and everything; the informer, who uses life experiences and book knowledge to keep us in the know; the reinforcer, who reminds us of content knowledge and connects it to the real world; the dreamer, who tells us about the endless possibilities; the captain, who keeps the class motivated and at times, in line; and a host of others, making them the most powerful team around.
My Project
This pandemic has taken its toll on us all. However, where adults have learned ways to cope, or even reach out for help; children have not. They have experienced trauma in ways unimaginable to most adults. They have experienced hunger, neglect, abuse and isolation as a direct result of school closures. Fast forward to September, when these students with these unaddressed issues come back into the classroom, some after having been home since 2020, and are expected to jump right back into learning. I firmly believe that before any academic teaching can occur, we must teach about mental health.
I want my students to know that, "It is okay, to not be okay," and that they have the room and tools to express those emotions.
For this project, I am requesting picture books to help teach them about mental health in an age appropriate way. I am requesting journals so that they may freely write in their own space to share how they are feeling. Finally, I am requesting items to make a mindful moment beach corner because I have learned that many students love the beach, and I hope that it can serve as a space to change their mood, even if only temporarily.
