Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a very large urban school. I service students Pre-K through 8th. Many of my students face the struggles of surviving in a major city - violence, poverty, and lack of resources. They are exposed to trauma on a daily basis.

I seek to provide them with an environment where they always feel supported and encouraged to strive for their very best.

Additionally, many of my students come from homes where Spanish is the primary language. Not only do they have to learn basic academic skills, they're also learning English.

The demands of home and school life combined with the effects of COVID-19 are often overwhelming. My students need to learn how to just be kids!

My Project

In a time of trauma, people need to come together to support each other and heal. A lot of time society focuses on the differences among us and neglect appreciating the similarities. I believe that lack of knowledge causes people to not appreciate various cultures. I want my students to learn that yes we are all different but we have a ton of similarities too. By learning about different cultures, my students will have a deeper understanding of our school family.

I want my students to be aware that diversity is not limited to just black and white but instead all types of races, ethnicities, gender identity, sexual orientations, ages, social classes, physical abilities or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.

It is these differences that make us unique and special.

By including multiple aspects of diversity, our school will become more inclusive. Donations to this project with help with the activities listed below. During the assigned month, we would present little known facts over the intercom in the morning. We have a display board that is located by the main entrance that the majority of students, staff, and parents pass. This board will be decorated with the featured diversity group of the month. In our monthly newsletter we will also include the diversity group of the month. The information presented during morning announcements will be complied into a trivia contest with winners being awarded various prizes.

With everyone being able to explore and learn about our similarities and differences, my students will be able to see it's OK to be different.
