This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 3rd grade at an inner city school in Texas. The teachers at my school are committed to doing "whatever it takes" to help our students achieve.

I can't read that! This is what my students will be saying to me this year. Even though I teach 3rd grade, my students this year come with at a 1st grade level. Not just 1 or 2 students, but my entire class is below level. I don't have many books in my classroom library that are on their level. These students are already coming to me at a disadvantage being so low in reading, and I have to give them books that they can read and understand. If I have any hope of getting them on 3rd grade level or at least to 2nd grade level, I need to start on a 1st grade level.

I would like to obtain 2 classroom libraries which span 1st-3rd grade. Each set has 15 books in it. This will give me a good start. I also want to have some read along books so that the students can follow along as they listen to the books on cassette. This would make a great center for my lowest students.

It's so important to me to help my students achieve success. Living in an urban area, they already have enough obstacles outside of school (gangs, drugs, low income). It's imperative that I provide this reading foundation. If I can't reach them now in 3rd, who will have the time in the upper grades to teach them to read? It's now or never for these students.
