Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being a teenager presents so many challenges, especially in the inner city. My students often do not have the outlet to express their innermost feelings, fears, hopes and dreams. These supplies will enable them to express themselves without judgment or fear, in a very safe environment - our class!
My students attend an urban high school where they experience things that no teenager or child should have to be exposed to.
Everyday is a challenge to stay positive and avoid trouble. The negative influences surround them at home, on the streets and even in school. They often do not have the ability or outlet to express their feelings that ache to be expressed. They are too busy trying to survive and make a better life for themselves and their families. Keeping a journal is an imperative tool in assisting my kids to "get it all out" and face their challenges head on. Their coping mechanisms are often on overdrive. Just think how your life would be different if you were never read to as a child, if you didn't have anyone to help you with your studies when you came home from school. That is what they are up against. Journals provide an outlet to "let it out" and gain support from me and their classmates in an environment where they can feel safe, supported and loved.
My Project
By creating a writer's workshop in my classes, my students will have the opportunity to not only work on their writing skills, but to have the opportunity to create a personal journal where they can write and share their innermost feelings, struggles and hopes. Many of my students cannot afford a journal or writing supplies. These supplies will be kept in the classroom at all times so as not to be lost or stolen. I often marvel at the progress my kids make and the pride they show by having something as simple as their own notebook and journal. Things most students in suburban districts take for granted are considered a luxury for my kids. They decorate and personalize these journals to portray their individuality. They are very protective and nurturing over these simple supplies since they know how precious they can be. It is my gift to them to be filled with incredible details of their lives, experiences, family issues and friendship situations.
Imagine having no outlet for your feelings.
Imagine living drama everyday with no way to let it out in a safe environment where there is no fear of repercussion, retaliation or negative judgment. Imagine being in a classroom where a vow is taken that "what is talked about here stays here." Having the gift of a personal journal, pen and pencil can open doors to begin the journey of self awareness and self preservation. This would be an incalculably valuable gift for each student.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
