It's Not Too Late! Decodable Readers for 4th/5th Grade ELLs.
Help me give my students nonfiction decodable texts. These simple to read books are a perfect launch point for emerging readers without looking babyish. These books will build their confidence and reinforce skills.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are new to the country and have had inconsistent education along the way. Many of them were missing letter-sound correspondance in their native language. After intensive intervention last school year, they are ready to read!
This project is requesting decodable phonics books for emergent readers.
Typically these types of books are designed for 5 and 6 year old students, with cartoon characters and childish themes. Since my students are 9, 10 and 11 years old, I knew I would have to find something better that would keep their interest and motivation.
These nonfiction books are science focused with photographs instead of illustrations. They are leveled and align with the sequence of science of reading instruction. Each book builds on the knowledge already learned (short vowels, blends, etc). I plan to use these as a supplement to phonics instruction. Students will also be able to borrow these books and take them home to read with their parents.
