This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Young children think that everything in existence is visible to the naked eye, but my 4th graders are just starting to realize that the "invisible" things around us are just as cool as the visible ones. Using microscopes would allow us to "see" our world in a whole new way!
We are 23 curious and talkative 4th graders that inspire our teacher to work hard every day.
Our school is in Florida, so it's no surprise that our class members are 100% of Hispanic origin. We are in a public school in a working-class neighborhood. Two thirds of the class receives free or reduced price lunch due to financial hardships.
My Project
We have limited resources, but we make up for that with our UNlimited curiosity. In the news, we hear about NASA's search for life on Mars, and the exciting discoveries that are being made every year. A lot of research is conducted on a microscopic level, and this is a new and exciting concept for my students. What can be seen under a microscope? Do life forms that tiny really exist? There's only one way to find out! My students need 5 microscopes and 5 sets of slides to begin exploring. Using microscopes to see everyday items such as cotton or dust would make a huge impression on my students. They would realize that you don't have to travel all the way to Mars to make interesting discoveries.
Few students have access to microscopes until middle school.
I believe that schools are missing out on a great opportunity to educate children. They are truly motivated and curious about science at the elementary level, and we need to provide opportunities for them to make exciting discoveries! Microscopes would help them recognize basic concepts about matter. It would also help them realize that the atom, although tiny, holds the genetic information responsible for all life! Amazing!
