Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.
My class is filled with very energetic 6 and 7-year-olds!
Our classroom consists of students of varied academic levels. More than half of my students are from low‑income households. All receive free lunch. Their home lives are just as varied as they are.
Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common. They are each very special children. They each bring their special uniqueness to my classroom. Our classroom is a very busy and exciting place!
My Project
As the end of the school year approaches, we are quickly running out of basic school supplies. Since the pandemic started, many of my students showed up to school empty-handed. Because most are from low-income households, they depend on the school, local churches, or other agencies to provide these materials for the year.
Because of Covid, we have not been able to share supplies.
This has caused our class to go through basic supplies much more quickly. I want to make sure that every student in my classroom gets to finish the school year with all of the notebooks, glue, construction paper, and other tools they need.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
