My Students

Students at my school love to learn, and can acquire so much more knowledge if only we had the resources. Some of these students are described as limited English students, delinquent, migratory students, or students with disabilities. The total enrollment is approximately 776 students. The ethnic composition is comprised of approximately 62% Black, 11% White, 20% Hispanic, .2% American Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% two or more races. In my school, 64.5% of the students are eligible for free or reduced meals.

One of the ways I want to inspire a love of learning for my students is through STEAM-based instruction with innovative technology.

As teachers, we need to learn and adapt to new technologies to stay ahead of the curve and prepare our students for their futures.

My Project

In a school that is categorized as a Title I school and deemed a high poverty school, we need to equip our students with the skills and knowledge that allow them to be savvy consumers and competent managers of their own finances in the future. Pizza Co. is an interactive game used with the Osmo gaming system that teaches students fiscal responsibility. My goal with utilizing Pizza Co. in the classroom is to bring awareness of the importance of financial literacy while students learn skills in addition, subtraction, fractions, fast-paced mental math, and basic business concepts. Successful players can even invest their profits into upgrading their business!

Besides striving to achieve proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards, we must also strive to teach our students financial literacy and responsibility.

In today's complicated economic times, parents and educators should be advocating for the importance of instilling financial literacy and wisdom in young children to prevent fiscal irresponsibility. Students need financial literacy to develop a strong foundation for life-long financial competence. Ultimately, Pizza Co. is a great place to begin teaching about being responsible with money. Pizza Co. is interactive and students learn how to run a business, make change, and keep customers happy while learning the value of a dollar.
