Help me give my students mainsail kits so they can experience the satisfaction and independence that comes from making something complex and technical from scratch.

My Project
Here at the brand new NYHMS, our 6th graders are serious about doing things for ourselves. We're already building two sailboats using traditional woodworking techniques in partnership with the amazing organization Brooklyn Boatworks. Now our boats need sails, and store-bought ones just won't do! We've got an amazing industrial strength sewing machine in class and the students have been learning how to use it to make canvas, leather and uphostery projects like pillows, pencil cases, backpacks and more! Now it's time to take it to the next level by actually making our own sails for our sailboats!
I've noticed that some students who are otherwise reluctant to get involved in school are activated and inspired when using their powers of creativity on an industrial strength sewing machine, just like I was at their age when they still offered Shop and Home Economics in every school.
Furthermore, students who are English Language Learners use this machine and are more engaged and vocal about their work than at any other class in the school day.
For this project, I'm requesting two mainsail kits for the Optimist Pram sailboat, as well as a grommet kit so we can attach fasteners and control lines to our sails and our many other sewing projects. Our students will be beaming with pride and other schools will stand in awe at the Boat Launch in June when we unveil not only a boat we made ourselves, but our own sails and custom canvas projects too!
