My students need to develop a love of reading. It is my desire to build a classroom library which students will be able to utilize for silent reading & quarterly projects.

My Students
"In the English language it all comes down to 26 letters. When combined correctly, 26 letters can create magic and form the foundation of a free & informed society." ~Unknown
It is in this spirit, as a first-year English teacher, I am endeavoring to build an engaging classroom library for all levels
Our school is located in an agricultural region of California, serving a vast range of student demographics.
Our vision is to not only challenge students academically but also "expecting all students to use their minds and hearts well." Our school is only 6 years old and we have been able to collaborate with this goal in mind. The results have been excellent, as we have been the recipients of several awards and our API continues to rise. Students are encouraged to work together towards success academically as well as with extra-curricular events, many of which focus on giving back to the community. We have many alumni visit regularly during college breaks and some of these have set the goal of coming back to teach at our school crediting the positive experiences at our school for their motivation. In an effort to continue to support this learning environment, I wish to provide our students with as much opportunity as possible.
My Project
I am a first-year teacher endeavoring to create a classroom library. I believe that reading opens the door to everything. It is never too late to learn to love to read. With this in mind, I am building a library which should appeal to varying interests and levels of comprehension. The books in my classroom library will be used daily by 180+ students and available to any student who needs a book for a project or silent reading after completing a classroom assignment. The books will also be used for round table discussions and quarterly book projects. We have such a wide range of demographics at our school that I want to be sure that everyone has access to books, especially students who may not have the time or resources to go to a library or own an e-reader. I look forward to having interesting and engaging discussions with the students 1-1 throughout the year. I want my students to enjoy conversing about books and ideas they develop.
Reading expands student's world view.
It gives them an opportunity to learn about others and use their imaginations. Their writing will improve as they discover how authors share their stories, real or imagined. They will find their favorite genre, favorite methods of writing, and incorporate them in their education. Most of all, when they go on in life, they will be well-read and able to find common ground with others even if they never leave their hometown.
