It's Never Too Early for Mentoring

My students need board games, out-door play equipment, and art supplies.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ogarro's classroom raised $484

All students need positive mentors in their lives. The Saturday Mentoring Program is a program that takes place one Saturday a month. Mentors and students meet at the school for three hours of fun and educational activities followed by lunch. The overall objective of the program is to foster meaningful, lasting relationships between students and mentors and to provide the students with fun, stimulating, team-oriented activities at a time when they would normally be watching TV or playing video games – probably alone. Each Saturday is divided up into three “stations” or time blocks, roughly categorized as “arts & crafts,” “educational,” and “athletic.” For example some of the projects include making holiday cards for individuals in the armed forces, playing a U.S. Presidents Jeopardy-type games (in honor of Presidents Day), and playing indoor kickball.

These students live in communities with many negative influences around them. The purpose of the mentoring program for the fifth graders is for them to be able to meet and speak with individuals from their community who are successes and can show them that their is more to life than what they see in their communities.

The students need arts and crafts and sporting equipment. Many of the activities we do are team oriented and the purpose is to build self-esteem as well as develop their social skills. The students benefit greatly from these experiences because as they go higher in education they will be required to work in groups to accomplish particular goals.

Your help in providing the arts and crafts and sporting materials is very important to the success of this mentoring program. Kids open up through play and expression and that is what we want in order to develop the mentoring relationship. I see the constant negative influences in the neighborhood and this mentoring program is here to pull these students away from the things that will damage their lives. I have heard from many parents that they are thankful for the program because it has helped to refocus their child. You make it possible for these students to stay on the positive path. Thank you.
