My students need a plethora of STEAM supplies to make their projects come to life: a 3D printer and filament, paint brushes, adhesives, pliers, batteries, hot glue, duct tape, sharpies, fabric pens, and more.

My Students

Did you ever make a cardboard spaceship or box fort? Create a model trebuchet to see how much force it takes to launch a beanbag? Ever program a computer or create a stop motion animated movie? How about designing wearable LED clothing, or imagining a prototype for a new device - and then 3D printing it?

My students are makers: artists, tinkerers, builders, programmers, creators.

We are a small school in a rural location with high poverty, and students don't often have access to the supplies and tools to let them stretch their creative wings.

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Our STEAM Lab supports students' creative hobbies, supports the work of teachers in the classroom, and engages members of the community to come share their skills and expertise. We reuse 'junk' that would otherwise go into the waste stream (plastic bits, old tubing, cardboard, board games with pieces missing, etc.) and give new life to hand-me-down hand tools, but we need more supplies to really get going.

My Project

Having the ability to imagine, design, and then create, without the barriers presented by lack of supplies, means that students of all backgrounds and levels will have the opportunity to stretch their STEAM skills and become creators.

These art and technology supplies will be the fuel to propel student creativity and drive projects and innovation.

From these basic art supplies and tools, students can engage in the design-to-build process for a multitude of projects: designing a better blade for a wind generator, or creating cutting-edge wearable electronic fashion, or prototyping a better widget and then 3D printing it... with your help and these supplies, they can help unleash their creative talents to learn new skills and create amazing projects.

So many of these projects cut across the curriculum, hitting standards in the arts, in math, and in science, even if the project is being completed in an English class. Having access to a fully-stocked STEAM Lab also means teachers can focus on developing authentic, engaging, project-based lessons for students, all without having to worry about where the supplies will come from.
