My Project

My kindergarten students are bright, curious, and full of potential. Many of them are learning English as a second language, and over 40% of the school population speaks another language at home. This set makes literacy instruction especially important — and also more complex. I created “It’s Lit” as a literature-based project that focuses on strengthening one of the most essential (and often overlooked) reading skills: listening.

Research shows that for students whose first language isn’t English, listening is a key part of learning to read fluently.

Listening builds comprehension, vocabulary, and language structure — all of which are the foundation for reading success. This project will help bring that learning to life through quality read-alouds, visual aids, engaging literature tools, and materials that support repeated exposure to stories and language in fun, meaningful ways.

My goal is to help every student fall in love with reading — whether it’s their first language or not. I want them to feel confident, capable, and excited about books. By returning to this “old school” method of rich listening experiences, I’m giving my students the tools to grow into fluent readers and thoughtful communicators. Your support will help me create a literacy-rich classroom where all students — no matter their background — can shine.
