My Students
Student-selected reading is something that keeps students motivated to keep reading, and reading in a "club choice" setting encourages students to control their own reading schedules, activities, discussions, and get the most out of the experience.
My English students are motivated, intelligent, and hungry for new reading.
Our school is a public, urban, inquiry-driven, project-based small school that attracts students from all over the city. Half of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Most, if not all, are college-bound. I love my students and I would love to bring them some of the best contemporary, intelligent, thought-provoking young adult literature to devour in the context of my class.
My Project
With 15 copies of It's Kind of a Funny Story, students in both of my English sections will be able to "club choice" this book, gain an appreciation for reading in a group and sharing this experience. Plus, this title addresses teen depression, something that many teens face and yet something that is not truly addressed in school, much less in literature. From this novel, my students will use inquiry, research, collaboration, and reflection to get to the heart of these characters and infuse their own life experiences into the mix. They will also present their reading and club work to the larger class and thematically thread it through the other work we are doing. With multiple copies of It's Kind of a Funny Story, I can also make it available to kids for Independent Reading, something I require in both semesters. Now, kids don't have to wait for the single copy to come back!
Donations for this project will help bring one of the best recent young adult books out there into the classroom.
Students will gain independence, preparation for college, and a sense of life-long learning through this novel and also the "club choice" process by which it will be presented in the classroom. This is a novel that kids will be talking about long after the school day is over, and one that they will push their friends to read.
