it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Providing a fun and safe virtual learning environment where students are challenged and LOVE to log in to school every day has been a difficult goal to meet. Not only does a love of learning lead to success in life, but it is also vital for our students, who come from impoverished and unpredictable homes lives, to feel that school is a safe place to learn and to grow the valuable skills they need to fulfill their dreams.
Our school district has the disheartening statistic of 50% of our K-8 students dropping out of high school and 100% of students qualifying for free lunch.
We are aware that if we do not prepare our students for future challenges they will not be successful when they arrive in high school and beyond.
Even with all the right tools, virtual learning has been very challenging for our students! With many of them trying to learn and demonstrate new content digitally, something as simple as a computer mouse would support their ability to navigate and create on their school-provided Chromebooks.
My Project
Our students spend all of their school days on the computer, live, face-to-face with their teachers. Unfortunately, because our community has been hit especially hard by COVID-19, it does not look like we'll be returning to in-person learning any time soon.
By providing students with a simple computer mouse, it can make a world of difference as they complete their assignments each day.
They currently use the trackpad on their Chromebook, but this is not sufficient nor is it comfortable to use as you create slide show presentations, navigate around various sites, and click through reading and math problems.
I wish I could do more to make their online experience as close to real school as possible, but I thought perhaps the small convenience of a mouse, would at least make their tasks a bit easier.
