My Students
Do you remember reading with your parents or a sibling at home? I want to capture the reading souls of my students and their families. Quality time with family and books!
My 2nd grade class this year will be a quite diverse group.
I will have the ELL (English Language Learners) as well as a hearing impaired student. Our school is comprised of a large special education population ranging from pre-school autism to an Intensive Daily Program. Our children, parents, and staff create a very accepting, challenging, and caring environment. I have taught here my entire 16 year teaching career. The surrounding community is a mix of low income to high income. We have it all!!
My Project
As education funding decreases, we as teachers, are told to 'do more with less'. This becomes difficult with the increasing class sizes and diverse learning abilities. I have a good classroom library that I have built throughout the years. Lots of books are well loved by the kids and used by me to teach.
I want an exclusive set of books to use only for a home/school connection. A way for parents to connect and spend time learning with their children. The children will be able to choose the themed book pouch that holds the most interest for them. Each pouch will include 3-5 books, a journal, and a game or activity that goes along with the theme. For a week, they will keep the pouch, reading the books, and responding to the literature with their parents or care taker. This will also give an opportunity to see other's thoughts and views on certain books. Quality time and reading exposure is the goal.
Not only will you give the kids an opportunity to show off at home, these book pouches will aid in the reading growth of my ELL students and their families.
Not only will the children be learning. Their parents, many of whom speak limited English, will also benefit. One of the most important things to me as a teacher has always been strong parent/teacher communication. This is not a step, but a great leap in enhancing that relationship.
