It's Going to Be Okay: Less Stress Means More Learning

Help me give my students a positive and (slightly) less stressful classroom space with fidget toys, social games for lunch, and positive notes to send peers.

My Students

Experiencing high school can evoke every emotion: fear or joy, angst or optimism, and sometimes all of these at once! Our classroom is a great place to begin learning about the outside world and how to be the best person possible in it. Each student is unique, from young athletes and artists to students with individual learning plans and young leaders. We're the fourth most diverse high school in the nation, and it shows in my classes!

My students are immersed in a journey that will culminate in college, leadership, citizenship, and life.

I want to prepare them to be the best readers they can possibly be, the kindest friends they wish they had, and heroes that their families and friends can be proud to know. High school can be difficult, but this is our chance to start on the right path. I want to recognize each student for their hard work during this difficult time.

My Project

My students are amazing. They are surviving during a pandemic. They have returned to school full-time. They are gaining skills they may have missed due to safer-at-home policies. This being said, it hasn't been easy for them to return to school and leave home during this time.

Kids need simple ways to destress during the school day so that they can feel safe, happy, and calm as they learn.

The research is clear, a few minutes of positive affirmations, a moment to play with a friend during lunch, and even a positive note from a classmate can make a huge difference. I selected some de-stressors that students can use alone (like affirmations and fidget toys) and some they can enjoy together during breaks (like simple card games and writing positive notes to friends). I hope all students find joy in learning and a sense of peace in my classroom. It will help them start the long journey through the second semester and life outside of my classroom.
