My students need hot plates and chemicals to conduct experiments in chemistry relating to the concepts of heat.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Barton's classroom raised $526
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are in high school chemistry and want to know when will we be doing another lab. I want my chemistry students to have the same hands-on lab experiences that other high school chemistry students receive by doing labs throughout the school year.
I teach in an urban school district that has not begun to rebound from the recession.
Over sixty percent of my students live in poverty and ninety-five percent of the students are minorities. Student breakfast and lunch are provided free to the students daily so that those that qualify for free and reduced lunch are not ashamed or embarrassed to eat the meals.
My Project
There are many content standards involving heat. The most basic is an activity where the students are asked to create a heating curve for water using a hot plate and creating a graph of their results. Another content area asks students to "use endothermic and exothermic in the lab." This activity would be accomplished using chemicals that will allow students to observe a chemical change. These items can also be used to address conservation of matter, boiling points and melting points.
This project will make a difference by allowing students to participate in hands-on lab experiences.
Working with chemicals is what chemistry is all about. I believe that these activities prepare students to take rigorous college classes and help them feel better prepared for the college experience. These activities will show that chemistry can be fun while learning takes place.
