Have you ever watched a child get excited by learning and exploring? This is one of the great joys of my job. I love watching that "lightbulb" moment go off in my students' minds. My challenge is finding the right way to present new material to my students with Severe Disabilities.
My students are in Kindergarten through Fifth grade classes for students with Severe Disabilities.
They attend a public elementary school with their neighborhood peers. Their differing abilities include: Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Epilepsy, visual impairments, and hearing impairments.
My Project
We are requesting a class set of Weekly Readers that focus on science as well as science based center activities for the body, life cycles, nutrition, the 5 senses, plants, weather, seasons, magnets, and colors. Having hands-on learning activities will increase my students' ability to comprehend the science lessons and greatly increase their knowledge of each scientific topic.
Thanks to your generosity, students from 5 to 12 years of age with severe disabilities will have hands-on activities which will expose them to important scientific topics like their general education peers.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
