My Students

The school where I teach and my classroom is an embodiment of the phrase "melting pot." My classroom consists of many English language learners, student with special needs, and various ethnic backgrounds. The neighborhood that they share is impoverished. These children come from very little but ask of nothing from me. I believe this is why any kind gesture, small or grand, breeds an incomparable gratitude. When asked why they come to school they all chant: "To learn!". But at school they get much more: Food, love, companionship, and escape. This year I have had the privilege of building up 18 mini Ms. Francois'. They have inherited my humor, mannerisms, sayings, but most importantly a burning desire to learn and grow.

My students are my pride and joy and I have been humbled with the opportunity to teach them in both academics and life.

Despite their age, my children have experienced and continue to experience more than most adults ever will. By no means have they let their circumstances limit them, but the knowledge of the possibility of "greater" and "better" have enabled them to persevere through it all.

My Project

We are gearing up to start our year back in the classroom. Now more than ever, I want to give my students the opportunity to work independently and safely within our classroom. This will require students to have their own materials and classroom tools throughout the room. The students will use their clipboards to store their classwork and have the ability to be more mobile throughout the classroom. They will be able to take their assignments with them and be seated more flexibly as opposed to remaining in their assigned seats throughout the day. Some other materials I am asking for is to help my students during my small group instruction. I am anticipating needing to help close many academic gaps, namely in reading and writing, and I would love to use the whiteboard and magnetic letters to help teach students to build and manipulate words in a small group setting. My hope is that with these materials, my students will foster an independence that will in turn enhance their learning experience. They will use these resources to learn new content and enrich the knowledge they have already acquired. After all, it is elementary!
