It's Electric!

In our school's Science Lab we often, to quote Miss Frizzle, "take chances, make mistakes, and get messy." When these 350 eager scientists enter the lab each week, it just takes a little spark to get them very intrigued about science and the world around them. Our school is located in a small, rural community and many of our students don't come to school with a lot of background experiences. These children deserve to have meaningful, engaging experiences that will inspire them to become life-long learners.

Our 4th graders study electricity. This is really fascinating to them. However, for most of them, it is the first time they have heard many of the concepts associated with electricity such as series and parallel circuits, conductors, insulators, or electromagnets. These are all topics required in our SC State Standards. Sure, we can read about electricity in our science texts, but a hands-on opportunity provided by the materials in the FOSS Electricity and Magnetism Module would spark an interest in electricity that our students will never forget!

Through this module, students would be able to create series and parallel circuits as well as electromagnets. They would have opportunities to test conductors and insulators and well as determine what strengthens an electromagnet. This kit would take our excitement about electricity to a whole new level!
