My Project
Students at Upper Mississippi Academy (UMA) are a special breed: curious, creative, and in many instances revolutionary. Something they have lacked are the adequate resources to develop their own electric circuits for their physics coursework and proposed electrical engineering elective. I have worked collaboratively with my students to identify initial materials required for us to create electronics projects of their choosing:
UMA students are keen to build Miniature Tesla Coils, Photoresistor Theremins, Continuity Checkers, Air Raid Sirens, Adjustable Frequency Generators, and Water Level Indicators based on schematics found online.
These are all reasonable and achievable electronics projects for highschool students. Based on initial circuit diagrams, they hope to improve these designs by establishing and etching copper circuit boards using ferric chloride, and soldering components into place.
I have verified and confirmed the materials on this list, as I have done similar work in a previous educational setting. Much of this will be new to these students and they are excited to try their hands at electrical engineering! School resources are dwindling, but this shouldn't stop our incredible students from learning at a high level with a hands-on approach.
Materials we need for these projects to come to life are as follows: ferric chloride, copper plates, soldering irons, wire, paint pens, batteries and connectors, 555 timers, LEDs, speakers, switches, a few potentiometers, an array of transistors, resistors, ceramic and electrolytic capacitors, and a DC power supply for me to help students troubleshoot. It sounds like a lot, but our learning community is ready for the challenge!
