My Students
A day in the life of the Discovery Lab is seeing students from Kindergarten through 4th grade work on real world STEM projects. They love working with their hands to experience and figure out how things work. Getting students ready for the future and learning programming through robotics is key!
Our inner city students come from various backgrounds, where English is not always their native language.
We are a Title 1 school where we receive 100% free breakfast and lunch for our students. Our students come into school wanting to learn and work hard because school is the safest place for a lot of them. When they enter my Discovery Lab, the excitement builds because they know they have challenges that they need to face like engineers, scientists, and many other professionals do in the real world. We also like to empower our students through art, by adding creativity into each of our projects. Students love working with their hands to create something or solve a problem. The best part is when they present their findings and the pride they feel from this accomplishment. Our school is also a wonderful place to learn because of the environment created by the staff. We show our love of learning to help foster that in our students, while taping into their individual learning needs.
My Project
Our 4th grade students are studying on electricity. They are at a point in their learning, where they have a specific questions they want to know the answers to & want to figure them out on their own. Using the littleBits kits gives them the opportunity to not only test out their ideas about electricity, but it allows them to create their own design throughout the process. They get to add color & choose various materials to design every aspect. The amount of pride they feel when creating their own challenge and solving it is truly amazing. Something else that is very important is they also learn what it is like to fail. Not everything they create is going to work correctly the first time. They learn in the Discovery Lab that when they fail - it is just their first attempt in learning! The other great part about the materials I'm requesting is that they can not only be used by the 4th graders in their Electricity Unit, but they can also be used with all the students in the school.
Please help my students unleash their creative abilities in the engineering and design process to figure out how electricity works!
Give them the freedom they need to design their own invention and empower them through art. Projects like this give my students that added edge they need to help compete for a seat at a STEM middle/high school to push them to their future careers in engineering!
