Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach US History to a highly inquisitive group of eighth graders. Two of my favorite things about them is their creativity and willingness to wrangle with primary source documents.

One of the major topics we cover in US History is the American Revolution. One writer provides a fantastic glimpse into the thinking of American patriots, Thomas Paine. Common Sense was described as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era” by historian Gordon S. Wood. Common Sense sold over 500,000 copies in its first year. Beyond being a great way to teach what Americans thought 200 years ago it also provides a great foundation for student thought. Paine writes that, "A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right". Ideally, students will take their thoughts and express them in the form of a pamphlet following in the footsteps of Thomas Paine.

With a class set of Common Sense, a pack of card stock, and markers my students can transform themselves into patriotic pamphleteers writing in the defense of American liberty.

With your generous donation they can become active participants instead of passively reading about the American Revolution.
