My Students

New Orleans is filled with a rich, artistic history, and this history can be explained and relived in the Art classroom.

Our school is an open, public school in Louisiana that services eager, ready-to-learn students who are in Pre-K through 8th grade that come from all areas of the city.

The majority of the student population is African-American, with about 2% being Caucasian-American and Asian-American.

My Project

Being the Art teacher, I service almost all the grades in the school. That means that a lot of resources are needed for the students to create art. Depending on the grade level, there are usually maybe 4 to 6 different projects going on in a week! For example Pre-K through 2nd grade art activities will be different from the 3rd through 5th grade art activities, and the 6th through 8th grade Art activities will be different from every other grade. With that said, I do modify the Art activities depending upon the psychomotor skills and thinking skills of that particular grade group so that some Art activities do carry over to another grade group. Students tire and are not easily motivated when faced with doing the same thing over and over, and that's understandable. With art, there are infinite possibilities to be creative that coincide with the state's curriculum. Also, art can be incorporated into the core subjects. This is the importance of Art. The resources allow all of this to happen.

My students need paper, markers, and colored pencils to plan their design, aprons to cover clothing as they paint with the brushes, and accessories to add final touches.

By creating a Mardi Gras coconut, students will be able to experience one of the most famous events known worldwide, Mardi Gras. This lesson can be be incorporated into Louisiana history, in that they can learn about Mardi Gras and the Mardi Gras coconut. The project will allow students to realize that Art is a part of everyday life and should be appreciated. It will also allow them to see that what they learn in school will apply to how they function in life.
