My students need caterpillars so we can grow butterflies and study their life cycle.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a class full of bright, energetic 7 and 8 year olds. They have a thirst for learning and are so excited by anything hands on and interactive. Most of my students are second language learners, and the majority are Spanish speakers. They are the children and grandchildren of immigrants with hardworking parents striving to make a better life for their children.
Our school is a medium sized, elementary school in the heart of Hollywood.
Unfortunately, we do not always have the resources to provide the extras for our wonderful children. We feel that our kids deserve the very best and we work hard to get them all the materials and supplies that make learning special and fun. I can hardly wait to see what my students will accomplish.
My Project
In our second grade class we are learning about the life cycles of plants and animals. The children study different plants and animals and how they grow and reproduce. While these are interesting subjects, they can be hard concepts to understand for elementary age children. Adding concrete examples with the Butterflies in the Classroom Kit helps the children to gain a really deep understanding of the subject matter.
Butterflies are a fun and interesting way to learn about life cycles.
The children can observe them through all the stages of their development, from larva to butterfly. We will be able to discuss and journal about all the stages of development, as well as learn the concept of metamorphosis. At the end of the lesson, there will be beautiful butterflies that we can set free in our school garden. What could be more exciting than that?
