My Students
I teach in a public school on the side south of Chicago. My students are a mix of 3rd and 4th graders with moderate to severe intellectual and physical disabilities. My students were all born with challenges that most people will never have to understand. They are the few that have been diagnosed with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other types of profound low occurrence disabilities. Still, everyday, these bright and beautiful children, with so much potential, show up at the door to their classroom with smiles and sometimes fear but always with grit. Way more grit than I have, for certain, and way more than most people I know. They are just happy to be in a place where they all fit in.
My Project
Providing my students with a library that has a wide variety is critical to the love and appreciation of books for the rest of their lives. Not too many of my students own books at home and unfortunately buying books is not always a priority for our families.
Students only read what they are genuinely interested in and kids with reading disabilities are not different.
In fact, they are more likely to choose graphic novels because they can interpret the story without having to read the words.
Our most popular books are dog-eared from so much love, the dust covers are torn and tattered. I still never mind that the kids are reading/using the books that are here. Books belong in the eyes and minds of those who are reading them. Although some of the kids are not yet reading, they sit proudly in the readers chair and they tell the story. Everyone listens!
