My Students
It's your turn to answer the multiplication question in the flash card facts race. You are nervous. Your palms are sweaty. The card is shown, and you squeak out "10"! Of course, the answer is correct because YOU learned your multiplication facts using exciting hands-on learning materials!
This is the second year I have worked with these students.
Last year, they were 3rd graders ready to explore higher level math. Now, they are 4th graders ready to break the barrier and reach for the stars! There are 27 children in our classroom, and we are Title One school in South Georgia. Title One schools are schools with a more than normal percentage of free and reduced lunches. According to state testing, our school was average in math scores.
As teachers, we have been tasked with improving our math scores. My challenge to my students is to have all multiplication and division facts from 0-12 ready to go at a moments notice by Christmas. The children accepted this challenge with excitement which shows their determination and their heartfelt spirit. You will not find a better group of students anywhere.
My Project
We are requesting Learning Palettes and Learning Wrap-Ups for multiplication small group and individual self-assessment. These educational tools allow the students to work at their own pace through a self-correct system that allows the teacher to check their work. The students do not realize they are working, and they think they are using a special game made just for them.
Donating to this project will allow 27 students the opportunity to learn multiplication facts in a unique and amusing process where they are the ones in charge of their learning.
Students in fourth grade are reaching that point where they want to be independent, but at times, they are not sure how to do this. Using these learning tools will serve as a means for the students to work with their independence and learn their facts at the same time.
