My Students

What a dilemma! My students want more story time. They'd be delighted if we shared story after story all day. Although it sounds great, it wouldn't provide a complete curriculum. The literature they love could also be enhanced. Individual CD players & a variety of story kits would solve the problem!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. My students enjoy story time at the Listening Center, but it only accommodates group listening. While some may consider this a way to build cooperation and conflict negotiation, I prefer expanding opportunities for story time. All students can benefit from listening to rich oral language. The recorded stories will be particularly useful for my English Language Learners. A variety of opportunities to retell the stories will also build vocabulary and reinforce comprehension.

My Project

I have a collection of storybooks accompanied by Cd's. My students enjoy unlimited access to a dedicated Listening Center, but with one CD player, they must agree on a story and share the book. Individual CD players would allow children to self-select stories and enjoy them anywhere in the classroom. Our typically temperate climate would even allow them to venture outside for story time under a tree. Although I've never doubted the power of a book on its own, Story Kits are a new, favorite tool of mine. Young children with limited experiences, especially those just learning English, make the most of literature with the support of realia. Traditional story kits include 3-D characters & other items to retell the story. Flannel board stories are retold by placing pieces that magically stick to a flannel backdrop. It's the same idea with magnetic story kits, but offer flexibility because most whiteboards are magnetic. No matter the type of kit--the more opportunities, the better!

When it comes to stories, why not offer children as many ways to access the literature as possible?

We have a group listening center, but individual CD players, traditional story kits, flannel board stories, and magnetic story kits would provide varied opportunities to revisit what my students so enjoy.
