This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As adults, we dream of marrying royalty & fantasize about winning the lottery. Four-year-old's pretend to be train engineers, cashiers, police officers, & homemakers. So popular are these pursuits that our train track connectors have broken off & our dollhouse furniture is literally falling apart.

I have two classes of 18 four-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Aside from the 3-4 adult-led activities, my classroom has 15 independent centers that change with each new theme. There are many things to consider when planning lessons and organizing a classroom for Pre-Kindergarten students. I must foster their cognitive, physical, social, & emotional development while providing activities for all learning modalities: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, & tactile. Dramatic play allows children to act out roles and scripts while contributing to gains in literacy, language and vocabulary, critical thinking, problem-solving and social skills.

My Project

Dramatic play builds comprehension by allowing children to act out familiar stories. Acting out home life in the dollhouse, students incorporate familiar phrases, expressions, and vocabulary of their family members that they might not typically use themselves. In addition, by pretending with others, they learn that words provide the means to reenact a story or organize play. When constructing a railroad, children use problem-solving skills and quite often, conflict negotiation strategies. There is also planning, trial & error, engineering, and creativity involved. Once the track is complete and the train starts rolling, the classroom is filled with imaginative sound effects that imitate the conductors & of course, the train! The safety vehicles will add some police officers and firefighters to the mix. The cash register will replace the one currently in use, which is a hand-me-down from my 21-year-old daughter. The toolkit will provide an opportunity to play Mr. or Miss Fix-It.

Pretending and trying out different roles may seem silly, but for a four-year-old, it is a golden opportunity to learn.

Dramatic play activities incorporate skills that promote cognitive, physical, social, & emotional development while encompassing the various learning modalities. My students enjoy most everything, but they all agree, "It's all about the drama in Pre-K!"
