My Students

I teach K-5 General Music at a Title I school in South Carolina. My classroom has a very limited inventory of instruments of any kind. I would begin building a set of pitched instruments by adding an alto and a bass xylophone to my classroom. I currently have one tenor Xylophone. That means I can accommodate only 1 child at a time. Students who have to wait for their turn on an instrument, often lose focus on the lesson at hand. For some students, this may be the only opportunity they will have to learn a pitched instrument.

Through the kindness of Donor's Choose, I was able to add a complete set of Ukuleles to my room last year.

Third and Fourth grade students have the opportunity to use these beautiful instruments each year.

My students are creative and have wonderful energy. They love to sing, dance and play instruments. Music class is a safe space where they can express themselves with encouragement and without judgement. Giving students the skills to explore, create and analyze music can develop a lifelong understanding and appreciation of music.

My Project

Having enough instruments for every child will benefit all students who come to music. Playing the xylophone works on fine motor skills and helps to develop a foundation for learning basic music skills like imitation, exploration, improvisation and composition. A xylophone is a tool that can grow with the students into more complex activities in the future.

Students will be able to create and perform musical pieces.

They can work together on ensemble music. Reading music, improvising, playing an instrument with a mallet and performing for others are some of the goals they will achieve. Students will learn how to create a musical accompaniment for singers and dancers. They will understand the vocabulary of music, like pitch, rhythm, meter, tempo and dynamics. Specific techniques they will learn on these xylophones include, chord, broken, level and crossover Borduns. Musical interactions such as these not only boost academic performance, but benefit children emotionally and socially.
