My Students

Our school is the most ethnically diverse school in the Chicago Public School System. We have over 1600 children at our school. 66% of my children come from low income households. I have been teaching in the system for over 25 years and have found that students learn science if it is hands-on and there is a total immersion of applied concepts. It is important that students experiment, collect data, analyze that data and formulate conclusions based on that data. It is my goal to provide these experiences for all of my 8th graders prior to their continuing education to high school.

My Project

Every year, I am stopped in the halls by 7th graders who excitedly ask, "Are we going to do that Chemistry project next year?" My answer is YES!! However, it is getting harder and harder to complete with ever growing class sizes and decreasing and antiquated lab equipment.

Students love science when it is presented to them in clear and concise ways that tie in real world experiences with hands on exploration.

Through out the Chemistry unit, the students explore concepts related to physical and chemical characteristics of Matter. They then get to apply what they have learned by completing a separation of a mixture using techniques that they investigated on concepts of density, solubility, magnetism, and boiling point. Students learn how to work in cooperative groups in order to follow scientific methods, creating procedures, performing experiments, collecting data and then formulating conclusions.

Please, help me provide my students with the equipment needed to perform the series of investigations leading to their own separation of a mixture by physical and chemical characteristics. The ultimate goal is to inspire the next future scientist or at least ensure an excitement and love for science!
