Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, NY. We are located in "Asthma Alley," and sandwiched between two major urban bridges - the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

All of my students are recent arrivals to the United States and English language learners.

They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.

Many are on public assistance; many others are barely surviving. Yet, my students are expected to meet the same educational standards as more affluent students of New York.

My Project

One of the best ways to show how the interaction of aquatic and terrestrial environments impacts each other is through hands-on investigations.

The Bottle Biology project simulates how our world is a closed global system by creating a miniature version of our planet with both land and water environments.

It requires that we first create a land environment by growing surface plants as well as aquatic systems with plants and animals (snails and daphnia).

To create these environments, we must first grow various plants from seeds along with the different soils requested. The aquatic environment will begin in an aquarium using different strata- sand, gravel as well as different water plants (from seeds), snails, and daphnia. This requires certain lighting for the plants and air pumps for the organisms. Once established, these two environments will be combined using plastic bottles to make tall columns to show how they interact and are reliant upon each other. My students will build and observe and monitor the columns over time.

As you can see, it requires not only resources but time. I've got the time. I need your help with the resources.

Help me make this project a reality.
