It's A Rock World After All!

My students need an earth model, rock and mineral kits and a rock cycle chart to continue their exploration of scientific concepts. My goal is to immerse them in STEM.

My Students

The STEM revolution is now gripping education nationwide. My special needs students are thirsty for knowledge and driven to learn. Our new curriculum embraces all subject areas and my students are learning more because of this link among all the subjects. STEM immersion is my goal for my students.

My "grape bunch" is a group of dynamic individuals who are thirsty for knowledge and driven to learn.

Despite their varied and similar special needs, they accept whatever academic challenges are placed before them and strive diligently to overcome such difficulties with boldness. While I try to inspire them to "think outside the box", to go further in responding to a question or solving a math concept or even collaborating on a project, they inspire me more by their eagerness to learn. They encourage me to think of fresh and innovative ways to facilitate their learning, with many of them having different learning styles. They need to be college ready as well. As such, STEM is for them too, because they need to "problem solve and apply what is learned", a critical component of the STEM curriculum.

My Project

Science is the first aspect of STEM and is delicately interwoven into our Global Studies Curriculum. Our emphasis now is on earth's phenomena of which rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion are the first component. Unfortunately, many of these materials are not present in the school. We need rocks and mineral kits, a model of the earth, a rock cycle kit and charts so that the students can be engaged in hands on activities. They need to be able to examine the different types of rocks and compare and contrast them according to different specifications. They need to look closely at the model of the earth and see the layers. The items requested will help students in their understanding of how rocks are caused and affected by weathering and erosion and how minerals should not be referred to as rocks. The earth model will help them better picture the various layers of the earth My students need to have these learning tools to help them better understand the earth around them,

As they leave college, my students need to vie for jobs that have a shortage of skilled professionals in the STEM areas.

My job is to make science. math and technology especially, as exciting and interesting for them as possible so that when they leave me and go to middle school and beyond, they will have a penchant for these academic areas. College and Career readiness begins in elementary school. The items I have requested will assist in enhancing my students' interest in science.
