My Students

"Technology alone is not enough, it is technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the results that make our heart sing."This is a quote from Steve Jobs that perfectly describes what I want for my students. I want their hearts to sing in my classroom!

I teach Technology and Graphic Design in a high school in a large urban school district.

Like all urban school districts we are short on funds for what are considered the "extras" by some. I don't consider what I teach to be an"extra". Learning how to use technology in a creative way and how to be visually literate is essential for my students. I want my students to have the same advantages as their counterparts in more affluent districts. My students are motivated, open minded and extremely creative. They are going to be the creative thinkers of tomorrow. So far in our Graphic Design class my students have created portraits for disadvantaged children in Thailand, designed machines that will help people in the future and created portraits of students and alumni to celebrate an upcoming school anniversary. My students are learning that their art can change the world and that it is the creative thinkers who will have a positive impact on the future.

My Project

We are requesting a digital camera for our classroom and a card reader so my students can upload their original photos onto their computers. My students are lucky enough to work in a computer lab and to be able to work with wonderful programs such as, Photoshop, Sketchup and Illustrator. They are constantly pushing themselves to learn more and more about these programs. Our problem is that we don't have a digital camera for my students to explore photography.During our recent portraiture project I brought in my own personal camera for my students to use.I have over 40 students in my Graphic Design classes and many of my students had to wait days to have their turn with the camera. The waiting is really frustrating for my students because they want to be working on their art all of the time.

A digital camera would allow my students more time actually working with the camera and more time to take photographs.

This digital camera would open up so many creative possibilities for my students. I get excited thinking about how much their photography skills will be impacted just because they will have more time to practice. This camera will be a resource that not only helps my class this year but it will be a great recourse for all my future classes.
