It's A Party! (Academically Speaking)

Help me give my students some party supplies (plastic silverware, cups, plates, etc.)

My Project

I won't lie: I have some parties here and there for my classes.

Parties to celebrate significant student accomplishments (such as when my entire AP class writes papers that leave me spellbound).

Halloween parties (the most popular!).

Christmas Parties.

Bottom line: I LOVE that Donors Choose created the "Warmth, Care and Hunger" category.

Usually, the students will volunteer (or sign up on a sheet) to bring various things: drinks, snacks, cutlery, etc.

However, most of my students are on free-and-reduced lunch and cannot afford even the simplest of school supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc.). Really, this project is meant to take some of the burden off of my students and to provide them with an opportunity to have fun and let loose (yet still learn) at school. The students will use these donations at one of the various parties mentioned above. Sure, it's a party, but we're always still learning. For instance: if we've just finished reading and analyzing Dickens's A CHRISTMAS CAROL right before winter break, I will show them one of the various cinematic adaptations (in order for them to gain visual comprehension of the text) and we will have a small Christmas party.

I try and make school not just a place of learning, but a place where students feel safe, and valued and where they can (yes) have some fun!

How else can you engage the students if they're not having fun? (and English is always fun if you ask me)

That is for the students.
