Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Students in class are not allowed to use any items to share. This eliminates most of the basic tools teachers rely on such as puzzles, games, listening centers, motor skills activities, etc.
Worksheets and digital work only go so far before students lose interest.
Even though I have included cutting and pasting, coloring, dabbing, and other interactive paper activities, students are still losing interest rapidly. Without recess and interactive PE, students are sitting for hours at a desk working with paper.
The activities in this project will allow me to divide each box into 3 or 4 sets for independent practice. I can distribute the individual sets for the week, then collect them for sanitizing/quarantine and still have enough for another round.
There are countless ways to have children practice reading and other skills. This is one that I can use during social distancing and will be able to use if it continues into next year.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
