This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach third grade in a rich community. We are rich in love, support, and concern for the growth of our students. However, in the same community, my students and their families often times lack funds for food and shelter. We are a Title 1 school, struggling to supply the same education as schools with more money. We are a staff that firmly believes that our students deserve the same education as their peers living in wealthier communities.
In third grade, the focus in Arizona's reading standards changes greatly from reading to decode words to reading to comprehend. 8 year olds are expected to not only read for enjoyment, but read to gain facts about our growing and changing world.
Our class needs this set of non-fiction leveled readers as soon as possible in order to succeed at our state reading standards. Even more, these non-fiction readers will allow my students to exceed the state requirements because of their access to a variety of non-fiction texts. Additionally, these resources will provide an opportunity for students to develop real-world skills, like reading the newspaper and following a set of directions because the fact-rich nature of the texts.
As a Teach For America teacher, it is my goal to end our nation's greatest injustice: educational inequity. I work relentlessly on a daily basis to improve the quality of life for my students in Arizona.
Your contribution to my classroom will help me to push forward in that mission. My students crave the opportunity to broaden their horizons, and the best way I can provide those opportunities for them is through a rigorous curriculum that challenges them to be critical thinkers, even at the age of 8. I am so excited to be able to use these non-fiction readers to provide real-world learning experiences for my third grade students and I need your help!
