My students need high interest reading materials to help them catch the reading bug! These award-winning comics are designed to help kids crack the reading code and become lifelong readers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our inner-city, low income elementary school.
My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.
They come to my classroom excited and ready to learn, but often they have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. The typical student in my class reads at a first grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. One hundred percent of our students are African American or Latino and benefit from free lunch. The opportunity gap and achievement gap are apparent between our student population and the student populations of more affluent areas of our school district.
My Project
As a Resource Teacher, I only get a small amount of time to make a big difference with my students. It's important for me to give my students access to high interest material that will not only improve their ability to read text but also make them want to read.
My students love superheroes, so what better way to bring reading to life then though comic books?
These high interest texts will engage my struggling readers and engage them in a way traditional texts might not.
The Toon Books website says it best: "Comics have always had a unique ability to draw young readers into a story through the drawings. Visual narrative helps kids crack the code that allows literacy to flourish, teaching them how to read from left to right, from top to bottom."
