Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a K-5 school in a rural part of town. The majority of the population is Hispanic and Native American, so most of my students are English Language Learners. The entire student population is provided federally funded free breakfast and lunch. Students are also provided with uniforms and school supplies. They are extremely bright, but because they lack supplies or funding, my students do not always get the same opportunities as students in other districts. My students are eager to learn. Our school is an active part of the community, creating a family environment within our halls, as seen through our active parent volunteers.

My Project

Third grade students in Arizona are expected to show proficiency in reading on AZMerit in order to "Move On" to the fourth grade. My students are working on mastering reading, writing, and math skills with an added challenge of also learning the English language. English language learners are also expected to show proficiency on the AZELLA language test. Listening comprehension is one of the components English language learners are tested on. Providing them with opportunities to practice their language skills will strengthen their language comprehension and prepare them for both of their exams. The iPod Nanos will be utilized daily for students to listen to stories, record their reading, check their recording for accuracy, and practice listening comprehension sample questions.
