This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our high school is a continuation school in California; students are here because they are behind in credits. Over 50% are from low-income households and we are an Equity-Focused school. I teach US and World History, Economics, and Government. Normal high school classes are 18 weeks; our classes are 9-weeks, so students who are ill-prepared have an intense program to move them toward graduation. These young students are about to be thrust into the world to fend for themselves, but somehow they are here struggling to catch up, and sometimes to just make it through the day. Students come often without supplies and without motivation, so teachers may spend time with the functional tasks that students need to be successful. My goal is to start the year by helping students to be organized, prepared, and aware of the skills they have to move toward the skills they need.

One of the problems our classroom has experienced is "How do we keep track of the enormous amounts of paperwork" moving in and out of class on a daily basis?

The literature organizers and folders will help students to keep their work organized and know where to always have access to the assignment. The pencil dispenser will hold students accountable as it is so easy to just grab a hand full of pencils when you only need one. And "10 Things That Require Zero Talent," even I need to be reminded that it's the little things that make a big difference in your success. Thank you so much in advance for your kind and generous donations to the future of these young students.
