It Takes Balls to Be a Real Musician!

Help me give my students a set of 30 squishy balls to use for rhythm and beat games.

My Students

My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my sixth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.

My Project

Sit and get is NOT the way my students learn music. They are moving or holding something or playing an instrument. Most people don’t realize that kids just can’t pick up an instrument in 3rd grade and magically be proficient. It takes targeted and specific work on beat and rhythm in the years leading up to the big instruments like guitars and basses. Clapping gets old fast and large tubano drums all day can make me (and the office ladies who share a wall with me) go bonkers by the end of the day. I have been creating rhythm games with large balls I’ve borrowed from the PE coach that the kids are enjoying and having success with.

Unlike a typical bouncy playground ball, these soft cushy ones don’t bounce or roll and are very easy to catch and manipulate.

We will use these balls to play a variety of passing games that I’ve created to target specific skills like finding the start of a phrase (beat one) or moving to the steady beat. And because these balls don’t bounce or roll, we won’t waste time chasing down a ball that gets away from an uncoordinated child. (Or one that gets chucked across the room by a wise guy.) When students are beat competent, playing an instrument is so much easier. Thank you for helping us have the balls to be real musicians.
