I teach in an urban magnet school in North Carolina. 85% of the kindergarten through fifth grade population is identified as economically disadvantaged.

Many students in the school are from large families that struggle to make ends meet. There may be extended relatives living in the home and one or both parents may work multiple jobs, leaving it difficult to get one on one time with an adult. Our classroom sizes do not easily eliminate this issue. With nineteen children in a classroom, many of which being high need for academics or behavior, it is hard to make sure that every child receives the quality time they deserve.

Our school is located in the midst of a business community. Many adults from the neighborhood donate their time and energy to mentor at need students. These mentors may help a student work towards math and literacy goals, work on developing social and communication skills, or continue to reinforce manners, such as greeting someone with a smile and a handshake. We love our mentors but understand that it is challenging for someone who is not a classroom teacher to know what to do with students who need the most help. The self checking math and literacy resources will provide our mentors and students with a variety of activities that they can participate in. These games are exciting for students because they are different than what they already use in the classroom. Mentors will love the supplies because they serve as great conversation starts and will take a burden off of the mentors because they will feel less pressure in having to know all of the answers.

The African American proverb says that "it takes a village to raise a child." It takes parents, teachers, the local community, and you, the global community, to fill the need in the high risk schools.
