This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade students in an inner city school in New York state. 70% of the students at my school qualify for free lunch. Most of my students are English Language Learners. Many of them are from single parent families, or families with 2 working parents.
My students are so eager to learn. However, for some of them, addition and subtraction is an abstract concept. They need to see and feel the objects in order to add and subtract. The foundation for math is set at a young age and I don't want any of my students to suffer from "math anxiety".
We need hands on manipulatives to practice math facts. The set of Problem Solving Math Boards comes with an abacus at the bottom and a dry erase board. Students can write their equations and figure them out on the abacus. This will help them "see" the relationship between addition and subtraction. The Add a Frog Math Center comes with self-checking problem cards. Students can problem solve and check their own work. These activities will increase their success and increase their confidence in math.
Your generosity will enable my students to master addition and subtraction facts with hands on manipulatives that they can see and feel. You will make it possible for some of my students to challenge themselves with Sudoko, rather than "waiting" for the rest of the class to catch up. You can make a difference in how these children feel about math for the rest of their lives!
More than half of students from low‑income households
