My students need books that are at their reading levels and at their interest levels. These books are lower level reading books, but they are at a middle school interest level.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 6th graders who live in The Bronx. The majority of our students are Title 1 students, they receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are ELLs, English Language Learners. They are recent immigrants to The United States, some students have been in the US for a matter of months. My students are from many different countries and come from diverse backgrounds. They are sweet and eager to learn.
One of the challenges that my students encounter is finding appropriate and engaging books at their reading level.
In order for them to acquire the English language, they need to read in English. In order for them to read in English, they need interesting books that are at their reading level. It is difficult to find novels for pre-teens that are interesting and at a lower reading level. Some of the books I am requesting are; The Gift, Zombies! and Body Switch. These books are about aliens, ghosts, and zombies, which are at a perfect interest level for middle school kids. These books are also at a very low reading level, so they are accessible for my students. Their reading and educational confidence will grow the more they read.
My Project
The books that I am requesting already have a reader. Each book was carefully chosen based on interest level and Lexile Level. Each book was chosen with a specific group of students in mind. For example, the book The Lost House is the highest reading level book I am asking for. It has been chosen for 4 young girls who are successful and competent readers, but really need to build their vocabulary. I think this book will introduce them to new words without being too challenging to understand. The book Out of Gas has been chosen for a group of 4 boys who enjoy to read but haven't really found a book that keeps their interest. This book has soccer and aliens, so I think it will be a win for this group of struggling readers.
Students will use these books to carefully analyze literature.
They will be looking at character change, setting, and plot. Students will use these books to analyze theme, point of view, and the tone of the text. I will create graphic organizers for each book that will guide students in properly using these books to acquire the 6th grade level of analysis they need to prepare them for future grades.
