My Students
My students are the most delightful group of children a teacher could be blessed to teach. My overcrowded school is located in a corner of the Bronx. They are inner-city kids, who must overcome many disadvantages in pursuing their education. The students are awesome, eager, and hardworking children who are struggling learners. A large number of these students are English language learners as well as special needs students.
My special students really just simply need extra support with their studies.
My Project
What kid doesn't love to play games? My fabulous students certainly do! After almost two years of inconsistent schooling (remote, hybrid, classroom closures etc.), many students have not yet mastered their basic math facts. Playing math games supports students' development of computational fluency as well as problem solving strategies. Knowledge and automaticity of math facts will lead to success in all math concepts. I could drill facts.....BORING. They could go online to a fun math website, but after almost two years of online work they are even bored of that. Lack of motivation leads to lack of engagement which leads to lack of learning. Playing games is an important tool for learning math in elementary school.
My students need the excitement and interaction of in-person, hands-on, math games to reinforce math facts and skills.
Their enthusiasm "multiplies" when we play any type of math game. Imagine walking into my classroom and hearing kids scream "Splat" as they play. I will love to watch my students strategize to hit their target number while playing "Target.” My students will be so excited to play these new variety of games they won't even realize they are learning. They will also benefit from much needed interaction with other students that was very limited for almost two years.
Now more than ever it is so important to foster an excitement and love of learning. Engaging in games will not only improve their learning, but will enhance their social-emotional well-being which will lead to higher levels of academic achievement.
